GFWC WV Southwestern District Convention hosted in Chapmanville

Nov. 16, 2012 @ 12:15 AM

Members of the Huntington Woman's Club attended the General Federation of Women's Clubs West Virginia (GFWC WV) Southwestern District Fall Convention recently.

The annual meeting took place at the Chapmanville Clubhouse hosted by the Woman's Club of Chapmanville and presided over by District President Patricia Walker of Huntington.

Seventy-six members representing the 12 general clubs and two Junior clubs participated in the proceedings to conduct the business of the Southwestern District. In the business sessions, delegates voted to support a Resolution offered by The Woman's Club of Huntington related to the epidemic of Diabetes in America. This health issue is the focus of the state president's special project along with Camp Kno-Koma, a resident camp for children living with diabetes. Other business included the usual reports from the board and the election of a Nominating Committee for the District which will report at next year's convention.

The guest speaker was Jody Cunningham, GFWC WV president-elect from Williamstown, W.Va. Cunningham spoke about the legacy of GFWC and encouraged clubs to think about the legacy that they are leaving in their communities. Cunningham also recognized the 25 Year Members in Federation with a certificate from GFWC West Virginia. Sylvia Baker from the Huntington club was honored.

Members were greeted by GFWC WV Southwestern District Director of Junior Clubs, Dana Richardson of Point Pleasant, W.Va., who told the ladies about the projects and enthusiasm of the Juniors. She encouraged general members to consider sponsoring or starting a club for the Junior age women in their community.

The next meeting of this group will be the GFWC WV Southwestern District Spring Workshop following state convention in March. GFWC is one of the largest women's organizations in the world and membership is open to women of all ages.
