Sawmill Diner serves campers, locals

Aug. 29, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Located near the Beech Fork State Park campground, the Sawmill Diner and General Store is gearing up to celebrate its grand opening Saturday, Aug. 31.

Festivities will begin at noon and will feature live music, a pig roast and face painting for the children. Owned by Mike Stephenson, the shop had a soft opening on Memorial Day weekend.

"We opened the Country Store in April, and when construction on the diner side was finished we opened the diner," said Tammy Gill, manager at Sawmill Diner. "We originally served hot dogs, corndogs, and deep fried Twinkies for the campers and locals at the general store. We gradually expanded to include a deli and ice cream before the full diner opened.

"I created the menu based on my own restaurant experience and items I thought would sell in the area," Gill added. "I also included some family favorite recipes and some of the employees' recipes into the menu. For instance, we regularly run a special called 'Flo's Baked Steak' which is a recipe that was created by Mike's mom. We also have a ham sandwich called 'The Cam' after an employee named Cameron."

The diner features an assortment of hearty breakfasts including The Sawmill ($7.25) which includes two eggs, a choice of bacon or sausage, home fries and two biscuits topped with, you guessed it, sawmill gravy. Other breakfasts include The Hungry Jack (pancakes and bacon or sausage for $4.95) and a fried apple biscuit called The Jordan ($1.95).

Appetizers include Pig Skins (potato skins topped with pulled pork, cheddar cheese and bacon, $5.25), pepperoni rolls ($1.49), and deep-fried pickles ($3.99). There is a selection of soups and salads like the Taco Salad ($5.95) and Lora's Chicken Salad ($4.95). Lunch include a steak sandwich ($5.95), a grilled chicken ($5.95), and pulled pork BBQ ($5.95). The diner also features a signature burger called The Jay-Boogie ($5.95) featuring Colby cheese and bacon.

The diner features a daily special for $6.95 each day. There's also a grilled chicken dinner for $6.95, and a fried cod dinner for $6.95.

"We're looking into doing some delivery service down the line," Gill said. "We are trying to get a pizza oven down the line. I think that will be a wintertime staple for families that can't get into town for a quick meal."
