Downtown pastor to preach with a bullhorn from church steeple

Sep. 05, 2013 @ 01:12 PM

HUNTINGTON — Here’s the church house, here’s the people, here’s the preacher with a bullhorn in the steeple.

Senior Pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ, 701 5th Avenue, Tim Dixon, has a special announcement for his congregation. The announcement, a surprise to all but him, will come out in a spectacular way in an event dubbed, “Rally Around the Steeple” at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept.  8.

The church has a mantra of taking its message outside the doors and Pastor Tim plans to take it both outward and upward. Although he has an admitted fear of heights, Dixon plans to climb 6 stories upwards into the recently renovated steeple to deliver this Sunday’s special message.

The congregation will proceed out onto the front lawn along Fifth Avenue to hear a message, literally from above, and invite their entire community of friends and neighbors to join them. The event is sponsored by the church’s Evangelism & Outreach team whose goal is to extend the message of the church into the community in various ways, including from 6 stories in the air through a bullhorn. They believe the ‘Rally Around the Steeple’ will be a fun and visible way of putting forth their mission of outreach.

First Congregational was the first church in the City of Huntington and they recently completed a full restoration of the sanctuary and steeple.  This will be the first time in the 141-year history of the church that such a sermon has been delivered from the historic steeple as well as the first time during Dixon’s 10 years as pastor that he has convinced himself to climb all the way to the top
