VFW adds buffet three days a week
HUNTINGTON -- With nearly 1.5 million members nationwide, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) is the largest organization for war veterans in the country.
In addition to lobbying for veterans' causes, the group has thousands of posts across the country where members come to meet and socialize.
Mark Pike works as the manager of the bar area at VFW Post 1064 located at 920 7th Ave. in Huntington. Pike is one of many volunteers who work with the VFW. For him the work is a personal cause.
"I'm not a veteran but I support our veterans all the way," Pike said. "My dad was a veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War. He passed away in 1979. I was 12. My dad once told me, 'Son, when you see an older person shake his hand and thank him for your freedom.' Ever since then I've been helping out veterans."
Post 1064 recently has made some renovations and now offers a bar and grill for the general public.
"Business started picking up last year, so we moved the Canteen bar from the front to the back so we would have more room," Pike said. "We had a guy come in, move the bar from the wall about 10 feet. He put up some bricks along the bar to make it look presentable, and we moved all the pictures of the commanders from the front to the back. We have had some people think we were putting a nightclub in here, but it's still the VFW."
The new bar began serving VFW members and the general public at the start of February.
In addition to a variety of mixed drinks and draft beers, the Canteen offers a kitchen menu with most items available for less than $5. These include hot dogs ($1.50), hamburgers ($1.50), and a fried fish sandwich ($3.75). The kitchen also offers appetizers such as jalapeño poppers ($4.50) and stuffed mushrooms ($4.50).
On Feb. 11, the kitchen started adding buffet bars which will be served three days a week. Buffet tickets are $10 for the general public and $8 for VFW members. Buffets are from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Buffet options change each week and entrees can range from ham to chicken to turkey.
A St. Patrick's Day party is planned for Sunday, March 17, with free food including corned beef hash and potatoes. The party will be from 1 to 5 p.m.
The VFW offers a number of different events for its members. On March 1-2, the VFW will be hosting a band named Eddie and the Cougars. On March 2, it will also host a Facebook party for friends who have previously met online. There are Karaoke nights Tuesdays through Saturdays, and the club is currently hosting a raffle with the main prize being a motor scooter.
The kitchen opens every day at noon, and closing time varies depending on demand. Cash, Visa or Mastercard are all accepted. There is also an ATM. For carry-out orders and information on buffets and coming events, call 304-710-5086.
