Huntington museum brings art program to area schools

February 24, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- The Huntington Museum of Art does an outreach program that involves a third-grade art project and sends Suzanne Alexander to schools in five West Virginia counties; Lawrence County, Ohio; and Boyd County, Ky.

Last week, she visited Nichols Elementary and made celebration masks with the children. She also goes over different elements of art and urges children to use their imagination when making their masks.

Alexander also talks to the children about what the museum has for them, including the free Saturday Kid's Art program.

Third-grade teacher Shelli Beckett said she looks forward to working with the museum each year, which also includes a trip to the museum.

Noelle Slone and Gary Jacobs, third-grade students at Nichols Elementary, trace out the shapes that they'll use to make masks. The project was part of a visit from the Huntington Museum of Art last week.
