Cheddar's celebrates five years

Jul. 25, 2013 @ 08:22 AM

ASHLAND — Cheddar’s Casual Café is celebrating it’s fifth year in Ashland.

The Irving, Texas-based chain opened the Ashland location adjacent to the Ashland Town Center on Memorial Day weekend, in 2007. The Ashland location is one of 36 Cheddar’s franchises run by Mint Julip Restaurants, a division of the Lexington, Ky.-based Greer Companies. Nationwide there are more than 140 Cheddar’s franchises.

The first Cheddar’s was opened by company founders Aubrey Good and Doug Rogers in Arlington, Texas in 1979. The name came from Aubrey Good’s son Greg, who in the third grade entered it in a contest. Greg Good would eventually grow up to become president of the chain.

“My father and I were very familiar with Ashland, he being from Eastern Kentucky and us having visited Ashland many times looking for a site,” said Lee Greer, president of Greer Companies. “A little over 10 years ago, we identified our current location as the best possible site for a Cheddar’s. It wasn’t for sale, and it wasn’t even a parcel. We envisioned what it could be. From then on, I developed a relationship with the landlord/owner of the mall, Glimcher Properties, and after a couple more years working with Glimcher, we worked out a deal. A year later, Cheddar’s opened its doors to the wonderful people of Ashland and its visitors. It was the only site we considered. It was the only site we wanted. Serving the Ashland community has been a blessing.”

The anniversary isn’t the only thing Cheddar’s is celebrating. In August of 2012, Cheddar’s was voted best “Pub Style or Grill” in a restaurant survey. The same year the chain was also voted 1st in several categories of Zagat’s surveys including Top Overall American Cuisine, Food, Décor, and Top Overall Rating in the Full Service Restaurant category.

“The menu has absolutely evolved over the years,” said Steve Pottinger, executive vice president of marketing for Greer Companies. “One thing that has not changed is that we focus on fresh, scratch, homemade food at a reasonable price. We are pleased to offer two new salads, the BBQ Chicken Salad and Asian Salad, as well as the new Mushroom Swiss Burger, Fresh Apple & Yogurt Medley, and the Low Fat Ranch Salad Dressing.”

Cheddar’s Casual Café is located at 530 Winchester Ave., in Ashland next to the Ashland Town Center. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted. For carry-out orders, call 606-324-1045.
