Five Guys Burgers thrives downtown

HUNTINGTON -- Some restaurants try to offer a little bit of everything. Five Guys Burgers and Fries takes the philosophy of only doing a few things and doing them well.

The chain was founded in Alexandria, Va., in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrel with the name "Five Guys" coming from the couple's four sons. In 2003 the chain started franchising and saw rapid growth. Today, there are more than 1,000 Five Guys franchises in the United States and Canada. The chain is also planning to expand to Europe.

The Huntington Five Guys location at Pullman Square opened in 2007. Since then the chain has opened two stores in Charleston, one in Beckley, one in Morgantown, and with one hopefully coming to Parkersburg in the near future.

"We feel that by having a limited menu we have the opportunity to be as close to perfect each time as we can," said Wade Arthur, district manager. "We try to make our burgers at the highest level. It starts with the quality of the meat. Each patty is hand formed, weighed and put in a press so it will cook constantly throughout the process.

"Our standard hamburger starts with two patties with nearly a half a pound of meat while our 'little' hamburger is a quarter pound," Arthur added. "Our hot dogs are 100% kosher beef or grilled to order. We also offer other sandwiches. We have a veggie sandwich, a great grilled cheese and a B.L.T. as well. Our fries are cooked in a three phase process. They're hand cut, precooked, cooled, then fried one final time which gives them a mashed potato consistency. They are available with Cajun seasoning, malt vinegar and ketchup."

The Huntington location is also one of the first restaurants to receive a "Coke Freestyle" soda machine, which allows customers to mix vanilla, orange, and other flavors with their sodas.

"We believe in the quality of our product and the quality of our crew," Arthur said. "Having an open kitchen allows our customers to watch their food being made and it allows our employees to engage with the customer and build loyalty. They're really great at it in Huntington, and we've created a lot of loyal customers with them. We run a spotless clean restaurant, with a high-energy environment that people love with a really nice outdoor patio."

The Huntington Five Guys is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted. For carryout orders, call 304-781-5700. Customers can also order online and through a new Five Guys app in the Apple and Android markets. For a menu, online orders and chain information, visit www.fiveguys.com .
