Smoke Hole Caverns gift shop back open after fire

May. 12, 2013 @ 03:05 PM

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Three-years after a fire forced the closure of the Smoke Hole Caverns Gift Shop; the 26,000 square foot facility is now open for business. West Virginia’s “Largest Gift Shop” is a mainstay of the Smoke Hole Log Cabin Resort that also features a Log Motel, Log Cabins, Riverside Cottages and the geologically unique Caverns with features that are millions of years old. The Cavern features the World’s Longest Ribbon Stalactite, genuine Crystal Cave Coral Pool filled with Golden Trout and Queen’s Room with her Canopy believed to be the oldest formation in the cavern, dating back more than 13 million years.

The Caverns also has accommodated the needs of Seneca Indians, Civil War Soldiers and Moonshiners throughout its history. Guided tours are offered daily, open year round and is a pleasant 56 degrees.

There is something for everyone inside the Gift Shop where bus tours, groups, and families will enjoy as its own attraction while it features trophy wildlife displays from New Zealand, Alberta Canada, New Mexico and others killed by our very own, Smoke Hole Outfitters/Calelas Pro Staff Members, Josh and Rachelle. The new outdoor “Moonshine Mining,” for fossils and gemstones,  will also keep the young’uns and the adults occupied while others  shop or tour the caverns. Log Cabin Resort property also features a catch and keep pond where you can just feed the fish or reel one in.

Nearby is the Monongahela National forest with trout fishing available off the banks of the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. Visitors can also hunt, fish, horseback ride, hike, and mountain bike. Other attractions in the Grant County resort’s vicinity include Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods Wilderness Areas, Canaan Valley Ski Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad, Green Bank National Radio Observatory, Fort Mulligan Civil War Earthen Fort, Potomac Eagle Train and Blackwater Falls.

Located 13 miles North of Seneca Rocks and 7 miles South of Petersburg on Rt 55.
