United Way's Success By 6 hosting the 13th annual Super Saturday event on Saturday, Feb. 2

Jan. 12, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- United Way of the River Cities' Success By 6 initiative is hosting the 13th annual Super Kids, Super Families, Super Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

This free event will introduce The Imagination Library in Cabell County, which is a program founded by Dolly Parton that mails a free age-appropriate book per month to children from birth to up to their fifth birthdays. The West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts handles participating counties in West Virginia.

Funding for The Imagination Library in Cabell County is being provided through a West Virginia Department of Education Dropout Prevention Innovation Zone grant received by Cabell County Schools.

"We are pleased to provide these grant funds for the Imagination Library. Our hope is that all parents of children ages birth to five will register their children to receive these high quality books. It is never too early to build a child's love of reading," Gerry Sawrey, Cabell County Schools Assistant Superintendent of School Improvement, said in a release.

Parents and caregivers may register their children at the event for free. Upon registration, the child will receive his or her first book. Only residents of Cabell County are eligible for The Imagination Library books.

"We are very excited to have The Imagination Library on board for this event," Lena Burdette, United Way community initiatives coordinator, said in a release. "This is another way parents and caregivers can provide books for their children at no cost. This will build a child's library with books that will encourage learning and interaction. We encourage Cabell County residents to come and sign up their children at this event."

Local organizations will also provide activities for young children and resources for parents and caregivers about the "12 Tips for Raising a Healthy Child." The event will also include door prizes and other giveaways. The event emcee will be Angie Fletcher.

Some exhibitors include Huntington Museum of Art, Cabell County Library, Playmates Preschools and Child Development Centers, Cabell Huntington Health Department, WIC, Tri-State Literacy Council, Cabell County Schools, Wayne County Schools, Pump Up the Fun and more.

Activities will include inflatables, crafts, story reading, singing and dancing, educational games and more. Parents and caregivers will also receive information about local resources during the event.

Success By 6 seeks to ensure that all children are ready physically, mentally, developmentally, emotionally and socially to begin kindergarten.
