Olive Garden hosting annual Pasta Tales essay contest

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Olive Garden is hosting the 17th annual Pasta Tales national essay writing contest.

Through March 22, students in first through 12th grades in the United States and Canada can submit an essay of 50 to 250 words with their ideas to end hunger in their local communities.

The grand-prize winner of the contest will receive a three-day family trip to New York City that includes dinner at the Olive Garden in Times Square and a $2,500 savings bond. In addition, Olive Garden will provide a $5,000 grant to support hunger initiatives in his or her local community. The winners in each of the 12 grade categories will be awarded a $500 savings bond and a family dinner at their local Olive Garden restaurant.

Pasta Tales entry forms and complete rules are available online at www.olivegarden.com/About-Us/News-and-Media/Pasta-Tales/. All entries must include the writer's first and last name, complete address, phone number with area code, grade, date of birth including year and a statement that the work is his or her own.

Entries must be postmarked by March 22, and sent to Pasta Tales, PMB 2000, 6278 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308-1916.

Submissions will be judged based on creativity, adherence to theme, organization, grammar, punctuation and spelling by the Quill and Scroll Society of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Iowa, with winners selected by Olive Garden.

Nominations being accepted for Kohl's scholarship program

HUNTINGTON -- Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Kohl's Cares Scholarship program.

Nominations for kids ages 6 to 18 will be accepted through March 15 at kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older.

Through the program, Kohl's will award more than 2,300 young volunteers more than $425,000 in scholarships and prizes to reward kids who have made a positive impact on their communities.

Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl's stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl's gift card. More than 200 of the store winners will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. And 10 national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner's behalf.

The Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program is part of Kohl's Cares, Kohl's philanthropic program focused on improving the lives of children. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl's has recognized more than 17,000 kids with more than $3.4 million in scholarships and prizes.
