The Lamp Post serving up diner-style favorites

ASHLAND -- For more than 14 years a small family diner by the name Katie's Corner Café occupied the space at the corner of Greenup Avenue and 15th Street in Ashland.

Last year that space was sold. Following a brief remodeling period it reopened under the name of "The Lamp Post."

"I was working at Andy's Barbecue last year and Nancy Tilton came in and said it was for sale," said Margie Holbrook, a part owner of the restaurant along with her husband and cook Carlos as well as Jim and Brenda Fields. "Some people had been interested in buying a restaurant and this seemed to be the way to go.

"We carried over the whole staff from Katie's," she continued. "They're all great but our assistant manager Heather Hamilton is fabulous. Heather had been here quite awhile with Katie's. She told us what really sold and what didn't on the old menu. We kept a lot of the original menu while adding a few of our own items."

One of the more unique items is a Smoked Meatloaf that Carlos Holbrook created.

"He came up with the meatloaf for one of our family reunions," Margie Holbrook said. "He wanted to try making it, and I thought it didn't sound good but when he made it and we tried it was fabulous. Everyone loves it."

While the name might be new, the diner's reputation for homestyle breakfasts remains the same with a choice of breakfast dishes, most under $6. These include French Toast ($5.25), a short stack of pancakes ($3.50), and the Rise 'n' Shine with two eggs, bacon or sausage, and a biscuit or toast ($4.27). Dinner and lunch options include Country Fried Steak ($8.69), a fried fish basket ($6.10), Smothered Chicken Breast ($8.39), and a one-pound burger called "The Full Moon" ($10.26).

For lunch and dinner The Lamp Post offers a different special each day including Chicken and Dumplings on Monday, Beans and Cornbread on Tuesday, Baked Spaghetti on Thursday and Jambalaya on Friday. Each Wednesday is the manager's choice. The restaurant also has homemade dessert specials including German Chocolate Cake, Italian Cream Cake and Coal Miner's Cake.

"Everything we do now we do from scratch," Margie Holbrook said. "We won't give you anything frozen and call it a home cooked meal."
