Putnam Farmers' Market ready for new season

March 04, 2013 @ 10:00 PM

The Putnam Farmers' Market is preparing for another season and is now accepting vendor applications from growers, producers and craftsmen within a 50-mile radius of Winfield, W.Va.

The market, located at Hurricane City Park off of WV 34 next to the water reservoir, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in May and October and from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays during peak production months of June, July, August and September.

For the past two years, the Putnam Farmers' Market has been voted top market in the state in American Farmland Trust's America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest small market category, and in 2012 was second in the nation.

In addition to quality local foods, the market also features the work of a few artisans who display juried one-of-a-kind items.

Throughout the season, the market offers a variety of community events including free activities for children, a Chopped cook-off competition, musical entertainment, gardening and cooking demonstrations.

Anyone interested in participating in the 2013 market season as a vendor or volunteer can find additional information on the market website at PutnamFarmersMarket.weebly.com. Additional contact information includes email: Putnam_Farmers_Market@mail.com, address: Putnam Farmers' Market, P.O. Box 351, Hurricane, WV 25526, or phone: 304-924-1736.

Ken Bolen of the Central City Farmer's Market in West Huntington said this year's Farmers Banquet Annual Dinner will be at 6 p.m. March 29, at Ponderosa on U.S. 60 in Huntington. Local farmers are encouraged to attend. Floyd's Flowers will begin selling at the market by early May. The market can be reached at 304-525-1500.
