Joyce Spencer: Community news for Friday, May 2
SONS: Jenny Chapman of Barboursville enjoyed having both of her sons, Larry and Rick, home for Easter. Larry lives in Barboursville, but Rick and his wife, Nena, traveled from the Philippines. Rick and Nena’s son and wife, Josh and Rowena, and their 1-year-old son, Joshie, from Fort Lauderdale were also there. Rick and Nena plan to visit his mother for about a month. Larry is a former educator at the high school and college levels in Tennessee, and Rick is retired from the U. S. Navy with 20 years of active service. Both are graduates of Barboursville High School, 1964 and 1971 respectively.
VISIT: Joan Gross of Barboursville also had out-of-town family members home for Easter. Her daughter and her husband, Valerie and Tom Yeager, and son, Hunter, visited from Jacksonville, Fla., where Valerie and Tom are employed with CSX Transportation. Both Valerie and Tom are B.H.S. grads, 1977 and 1979 respectively. Joan recently received news that her granddaughter, Christine Workman, daughter of Penny Gross Lombard (B .H.S. 1979) of Wellington, Fla., and Jerry Workman (B.H.S. 1979) of Wellington, was initiated into “Florida Blue Key” on April 27. This organization, a student honor and service society, is recognized as the University of Florida’s oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary. Christi is a junior at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
NAMED: Tyler Agee, a junior at Centre College, Danville, Ky., has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2013 fall semester. He is a 2011 Huntington High School graduate and is majoring in financial economics. He will be interning this summer at Hilliard Lyons in Louisville. Tyler is the son of Brian and Susie Agee and the grandson of Bob and Earleen Agee and Opal Baylous of Huntington.
CONGRATS: Congratulations to Shamil Patel, Hogan Carter, and Joseph Garrett Snyder, 8th grade students at Barboursville Middle School, who placed third in the West Virginia Social Studies Fair. Their project was “How Apple Has Influenced Technology” in the United States history category.
FRIENDSHIP: Church Women United hosts a May Friendship Day at 11 a.m. today, May 2, at Woodlands Retirement Community, One Bradley Foster Drive. The theme is: “We are in God’s hands and we are God’s.” Lunch will be offered at noon for $8.
GAMES: Local families will play board games from 7-9 p.m. today at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, 5747 East Pea Ridge Road. Participants are asked to bring one of their favorite games and a refreshment to share with others. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 304-730-3565.
HIKE: The Native Plant Society will sponsor a hike tomorrow, May 3, at Beech Fork Lake. Hikers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the marina near Lavalette. For more information, contact Romie at 304-523-1049.
REUNION: The 1964 Barboursville High School class has its 50th class reunion Aug. 22-23. Friday evening activities will be at 7 p.m. at Logan’s Roadhouse, and Saturday’s dinner will be at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Route 60 East, Barboursville.
