Enslow food drive to help over break
HUNTINGTON -- A team of teachers and students at Enslow Middle School are working to collect nonperishable food items, cash and gift cards to help those students and families within the school have food during Thanksgiving break.
Jason Dillon, a teacher at Enslow, said the school has sponsored a number of families in past years. But there is more urgency this year because Cabell County has the entire week of Thanksgiving off.
"Because of additional federal funding and Title I funds, the school provides breakfast, lunch and an early dinner to all its (285) children," Dillon said. "This year, we're looking at 10 days of them not being in the building."
From Thursday, Nov. 1 through Thursday, Nov. 15, those wanting to donate nonperishable foods, cash or gift cards can drop it off at the school at Collis Avenue and 26th Street in Huntington, during regular school hours of 7 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Dillon said counselors will identify the families most in need, and he also is seeking local retailers to provide turkeys for Thanksgiving.
