HHS students take first place in pumpkin drop

Nov. 04, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Several students from a pre-engineering class at Huntington High School recently took first place in the high school division at the 2012 Capital City Pumpkin Drop at Appalachian Park in Charleston.

The event, hosted annually by Bridgemont Community and Technical College, draws teams from schools throughout the state. Students from Beale and Leon elementary schools in Mason County and Wayne Elementary in Wayne County also participated.

Andrew Merritt, who teaches the class at Huntington High, said the winning design involved a padded five-gallon bucket put inside a box that had enough padding to absorb the impact of fall.

"I'm really proud of my kids for working together as a team and going through the whole design process," he said. "They did the research and had prototypes. They built something that was hands-on."

The team included Jeremy Perkins, Stephany Lundy, Hunter Hardy, Tanner Napier, Damien Dempsey, Xavier Garcia, Danny Meade, Tyler Lusk, George Stone, Nick Marcum, Robert Sylvester and Nathan Korne.
