Local schools receive national recognition

Purchase this photoHUNTINGTON -- Three area schools were rewarded by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation at a banquet Oct. 21, for transforming their schools into healthier places for students and staff.
Local winners included the Cabell County Alternative School, whose wellness council created a wellness activity room and furnished it with indoor sports equipment. The school also added physical education to the curriculum for the middle school students who attend there, while hot items were added to the lunch menu.
The school offers fresh fruit and nutritional information, while also providing staff with wellness screenings and a walking program that can earn them a $10 premium discount on their health insurance.
Salt Rock Elementary discovered that added taste testing and "Recipe Fridays" has helped students make healthier choices. The school wellness council is seeing improvements in fitness since they started a morning walking club and started sharing more physical activity resources with students and staff.
And, Mountain View Elementary in Hurricane placed aides near the salad bar at lunch time to encourage students to choose more fruits and vegetables. A new pedometer walking program was created to get students motivated about taking more steps and being active. The staff also was able to participate in wellness checks and health screenings along with a pedometer program and Zumba classes.
All three schools won bronze awards.
