Ky. student receives Greenup scholarship
GREENUP, Ky. -- Laken McKinney, a 2012 graduate of Fairview High School, received the Hazel Frazier Doran and Leo Paul "Sonny" Scholarship.
She is the daughter of Ray and Melony McKinney of Westwood and is attending the University of Pikeville to pursue a degree in business administration.
The Hazel Frazier Doran Scholarship was established in 2000 to honor the memory of Hazel Frazier Doran of Greenup. In 2006, the scholarship was changed to the Hazel Frazier Doran and the Leo Paul "Sonny" Hoff scholarship to also honor the memory of Leo Paul "Sonny" Hoff of Westwood, who Doran's brother-in-law.
Marshall student receives scholarship
HUNTINGTON -- Donald J. Bays, an undergraduate student at Marshall University studying physics, was awarded the Alva and Dixon Callihan/ John Marshall Scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year, worth $1,000.
South Point student recognized
SOUTH POINT -- South Point High School senior John Archambault was recently recognized as a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the country are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although these students will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, they placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifiying Test.
Orchestra concert scheduled for Nov. 1
HUNTINGTON -- The Tri-State Youth Orchestra's string section will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the ballroom at the ARTS Renaissance Center.
Students from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia participate in the orchestra.
