Jewel City Rollergirls to host free community skate night at Skateland

HUNTINGTON —  What’s cooler than an appearance by Santa Claus?  How about an appearance by Santa Claus and Spiderman.

And what’s cooler than that — free skating to boot as the Huntington’s rollerderby team, the Jewel City Rollergirls give back to the community with a night of free roller skating.

The JRG are hosting the event so that some kids who might not be able to afford to go out skating all the time can have some Christmas fun. There will be prizes, food (milk and cookies) and special appearances by Santa Claus and Spiderman, too.

  Jewel City Rollergirls are also be giving away vouchers for a free children's haircut at True Blue Salon and free children's yoga classes at Studio 8 to everyone who attends thanks to the team’s sponsors and friends of the team.

 Formed two years ago, the Jewel City Rollergirls, which consists of about two dozen team members ages 18 and older, have been competing regionally in flat-track roller derby.  The team, which has been on the road against teams from as far away as Louisville and Cleveland. In August, the team held its first home bout, a sold-out night over in Boyd County, Ky.
