Former Cabell schools official earns state award

CHARLESTON -- Geraldine "Gerry" J. O'Connor Sawrey, a retired Cabell County assistant superintendent and longtime advocate of early childhood education, has been named the 2014 recipient of the West Virginia Champion of Pre-K Award.

Hurricane, Lincoln take home grand champion in Division I honors in Harvest of Champions

ONA -- Hurricane High School took home grand champion honors in Division I of the third annual WV Pumpkin Festival Harvest of Champions Marching Band Competition hosted by the Cabell Midland Marching Knights, under the direction of Tim James, on Saturday, Sept. 20. Hurricane was also recognized for Outstanding Show Design and took home honors for Outstanding Soloist for trumpet.

Jean McClelland: NFL Super Bowl rings and knockoffs growing in popularity

Sports, particularly football, has many degrees of interested fans. Some may have a passing interest while others have an addiction that has them glued to the sports channels 24-7. Whatever the interest level everyone knows the culminating event for the football season is the Super Bowl. Everyone also knows the game winners are rewarded with a Super Bowl ring that is becoming quite the collectible.

Janet McCormick: 5-star fish soup is wholesome and satisfying

I know my way around a salad, and anything green is my canvas in which I will open up the flood gates of inspiration and pour out a story that will be forced into syndication and retold at any and all gatherings centered around food. But when it comes to fish I find I'm a bit challenged and in my search for a new and different technique for the catch of the day.
