First opening in October of 2015, Southside Sliders is a small food truck that has become a staple with the lunch and late-night crowds. The truck offers a variety of sandwiches that honor owner Jason Webb's Huntington roots, such as the “Thundering Herd” buffalo chicken, the “Ritter Park” four cheese grilled cheese, and the WSAZ chili-cheese Fritos.
“I had grandmothers that always cooked around me. I grew up around the Brodoff family that had Victor's Deli on 8th Street. They named sandwiches after their kids and family members. I did medical and pharmaceutical sales for a long time and then I got into catering. Three years ago I got into the restaurant business with a buddy who was managing a Subway franchise. Now I have a staff of two incredible guys that have been keeping the truck running for me over the past few years,” owner Jason Webb said.
“We originally started with an '88 Diesel truck that we ran for the first year. After the engine wound up blowing up on us we had to take all of the equipment out of the old truck and put it into a new truck. It was an empty cargo truck that we refitted. We had to drive to Baltimore, Maryland, to pick up the truck. It took us about 30 days to flip the truck,” he said.
In addition to a monthly special, there are also daily specials called Chef's Crazy Creations. These include the “A1 Burger” with steak sauce, Swiss cheese, sautéed onions and pickles. There's also the “Cheesy Tot Burger” with bacon, tater tots, nacho cheese, ketchup, hot sauce, ranch and pickles. If you prefer to keep things basic, the original hamburger is $3.28 while the cheeseburger is $3.78, and the bacon cheeseburger is $4.28. Specialties include the “Lucille” BBQ Pulled Pork ($3.28), the “Greek” burger with lamb ($4.77), and the “Pony Express” Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin ($3.74).
“There are some challenges in the winter time. The biggest being keeping the guys warm, and getting out on the road safe. If we can get out on the road we do. Traffic does slow down a bit this time of year, but we offer catering delivery, and we typically park in front of a large business,” Webb said. “Each month we have a burger of the month. For November we actually had a turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry mayo. We may go with that again but we may do something different. My chef Tyler Shelton has been in the business for a long time and I just let him go crazy with things.”
