HUNTINGTON -- More than 1,000 cancer survivors have registered to participate in this year's Cabell County Relay for Life, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Huntington High School.
The event has grown steadily over the last few years, according to Leona Berry, co-chair for the event.
"Through relay, we get that message out to the public of what the American Cancer Society has," Berry said.
She said the relay's opening ceremony is unforgettable.
"Watching all the survivors take their survivors lap is one of the most precious and awesome things -- to see how many people have fought the fight. They've fought this battle, and they're still here today to tell you about it," she said.
More than 3,000 people can be expected to attend this year's relay, in which people are to sign up to walk the track outside the high school throughout the evening and night.
"We are celebrating, remembering and fighting back against this disease," said Terri Francis, community income manager for the American Cancer Society.
Francis said the event hopes to raise $205,000 for the society.
The theme for this year's relay centers around Hollywood glamour and will include a red carpet for survivors, impersonations and a wall of fame. Francis said participants also will be asked to dress as their favorite celebrities as part of a celebrity look-a-like contest.
Participants may register for the event up until it starts. Everyone is encouraged to arrive early to prevent parking problems.
Survivors also are invited to attend a survivors' reception at 4:30 p.m. at the high school.
