Huntington church paints Ritter Park bridge

October 27, 2007 @ 12:12 PM

HUNTINGTON — About a dozen members of the New Beginning Apostolic Church could be seen Saturday morning hanging around the tennis courts near Ritter Park.

They weren’t swinging rackets, but rather paintbrushes. They were easy to spot because their clothes were smattered with white paint.

Church members were taking part in the National Make a Difference Day by lending their time to the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District by painting the bridge on 12th Street.

Make A Difference Day was created USAWeekend Magazine and is the most encompassing national day of helping others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors according to the Web site www.usaweekend.com.

“The park is something every one of us uses, whether it’s for walking or picnicking,” said Dr. Robin Ashford, director of the church’s Sunday School. “This is what the Park Board told us would be most beneficial.”

Workers from the park prepped the bridge for the Saturday morning project and even provided the paint, Ashford said.

The project also made a statement to the community that New Beginning Apostolic Church cares about what goes on outside its own doors, associate pastor Todd Mills said.

“We’re just trying to show the community we’re interested in the people of Huntington,” he said. “We can use this as outreach.”

Twelve-year-old Taylor Pennington, who is part of the youth group that got involved with the project, said he has some painting experience on his resume from helping his parents paint their house. But the bridge, he said, is more special because he’ll be able to tell people that he and his church family painted it together.

“I like helping other people,” Pennington said.
