No broken bones, but Sen. Byrd must undergo physical therapy

February 28, 2008 @ 06:30 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd remains hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after a fall at his Virginia home.

The senator's office announced Thursday that the 90-year-old senator didn't break any bones, but will undergo physical therapy as a precaution.

Spokesman Jesse Jacobs says doctors want to ensure the West Virginia Democrat is steady on his feet when he returns to his Senate duties next week.

Byrd, who often walks with the aid of two canes, was admitted Tuesday to the Washington hospital, a day after his fall.

Jacobs says Byrd is in good spirits and eager to return to work.

Byrd is the longest-serving senator in U.S. history. As president pro tempore, he's third in line to the presidency. He's also chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
