Heimbecker's goal powers Herd 1-0 victory over UAB
HUNTINGTON -- Junior Dana Heimbecker recorded his second goal of the season in the final seconds of regulation to lift Marshall to a 1-0 win over UAB in Conference USA men's soccer Saturday night at Sam Hood Field.
This was Marshall's first win against UAB and No. 379 for Thundering Herd coach Bob Gray to rank him sixth among active coaches in wins.
With 34 seconds remaining, senior Avneet Shergill's passed led Heimbecker to a one-on-one with Wes Johnson, goalkeepr for the Blazers (5-8-1, 0-5-0). Heimbecker dribbled around Johnson and scored into the open net.
The Blazers received a corner kick in the last 10 seconds. After an attempt by a UAB forward sailed left, the game was over.
With the win, Marshall improves to 8-5-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in Conference USA, while UAB drops to 5-8-1 and 0-5-0 in conference action.
Marshall keeper Craig Ratanamorn earned his third career shutout and dropped his goals against average to .90.
The Herd's next match is 7 p.m. Saturday against Kentucky in Lexington.
