ONA -- Tens of thousands of Cub Scout organizations entertain boys across the nation every summer; now they are offering fun for the entire family.
Camp Arrowhead in Ona will be the location of the Cub Scout Family Camp this weekend. The camp is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, the Sportsman Alliance Trail Blazer Committee, and the Tri-State Area Council.
Families from any Cub Scout council are invited to attend the camp. The family-oriented camp is intended to foster a positive environment for the entire family. Time at the camp is spent outdoors, with an emphasis on getting away from television, computers, and everyday chores and instead focusing on quality time spent among family.
"They have time to work out their differences, work together to achieve goals, and learn to support one another," says Ray Franks, Scout executive.
The weekend is scheduled with various activities including leather crafts, BB gun shooting, rowing, fishing and archery. A new climbing wall built at Camp Arrowhead will be available for its first use this weekend.
Third-party presentations include fire prevention awareness with Smokey the Bear, a demonstration on duck and turkey calls, and a hunting dog demonstration. Other events include an ongoing scavenger hunt, a games area, a star gazing session and an outdoor campfire.
The event also promotes family-oriented exercise.
"It is certainly a good time for families to learn new outdoor hobbies that will create better family spirit and will also help reduce obesity. Just spending more time outside where your body does not have the benefit of a perfectly controlled environment requires the body to burn more calories than staying home," says Franks.
Registration forms as well as more information about the camp are available online at www.tsacbsa.org, or by calling Robin McChristian at the Scout Service Center, 304-523-3408.
