New 14 West Senior Center opens today
HUNTINGTON -- Seniors have a new place to have some lunch, get some exercise, get involved in recreational activities and learn more about issues that affect their lives.
The 14 West Senior Center opens today at 555 14th St. West in the space that was formerly the Central City Market. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and it's open to those 60 and older.
The center will offer a senior lunch program, with lunch at noon, an exercise program with low-impact exercises appropriate for seniors, as well as crafts, bingo, grocery shopping and informational presentations on topics such as prescription drugs and drug interactions and other health matters, said Robert Roswall, executive director of the Cabell County Community Service Organization.
The center also will have a nutrition site that formerly was at Madison Manor on Madison Avenue.
"We'd had a lot of requests for services in that end of town," Roswall said about how the site was selected. "We think it's a good thing to get people out of high rises and get them into a facility where they can socialize."
A van will stop at 10:45 a.m. daily at Madison Manor to pick up seniors who would like to visit the new senior center.
Kenny Bolen will run 14 West Senior Center, which required about $5,000 in renovations to the former market facility, Roswall said. He thanked the Cabell County Commission, state Sen. Evan Jenkins, D-Cabell, and state delegates Doug Reynolds and Dale Stephens, both D-16, for helping secure funds for the project.
"It's kind of a temporary thing for two to three years," Roswall said. CCCSO hopes to eventually renovate and move into the old West Middle School on Jefferson Avenue, which is now being used as Huntington Middle School until a new school is finished on the South Side.
