IRONTON — It’s too late to register, but there’s still plenty of time to make your plans to go watch the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 on basketball tournament in downtown Ironton this weekend.

The event will take place Saturday and Sunday on the streets of downtown Ironton

“We have 234 teams signed up this year, that’s down about 10 percent from last year,” said Joyce Lynd, tournament chair and organizer. “But with the economy and gas prices the way are, we’re pleased with the final numbers.

“We’re looking forward to the weekend.”

Gus Macker is a national 3-on-3 basketball tournament that brings thousands of people of all ages to host cities for its popular event. In its previous three years in the Ironton community, the tournament has gradually increased in popularity.

Last year the Ironton event had more than 250 teams of players ages 6 to 51. The teams consist of four players, three on the court and one substitute. The event is open to anyone regardless of age. Trophies are awarded to the winners.

There is also a Slam Dunk Contest with a $1,000 prize for the first place finisher. The contest will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the basketball action, which includes both male and female teams, there are concessions and plenty of children’s activities near the courts. One new event for this year is a “Guitar Hero” contest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event, which was started by the Friends of Ironton to help bring some people and excitement back to downtown Ironton, relies on the help of dozens of volunteers.

“We’re hoping that the rain holds off,” Lynd said. “The Gus Macker players are a pretty tough bunch.”

The tournament will continued to be played in some rain, but not heavy downpours or thunderstorms.
