Charleston officer indicted on fraud charges
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Charleston police officer has been indicted on two fraud-related felony charges.
A Kanawha County grand jury charged Corporal Keith O. Peoples on Friday with obtaining money by a fraudulent scheme and computer fraud.
Police Chief Brent Webster wouldn’t comment on whether the charges are related to an investigation of officers working for an outside employer on the city’s time.
One former officer was convicted last year of the same felony charges for double dipping. Three others pleaded guilty to obtaining by fraudulent schemes, a misdemeanor.
Peoples’ attorney, Jesse Forbes, says the 44-year-old officer is innocent. He says prosecutors are wasting time trying to blame Peoples for a crime he didn’t commit.
