ACTC offers numerous summer programs for kids

ASHLAND — Ashland Community and Technical College has a full summer of fun planned for College Camp 2008.

The camp, open to children ages 6 to 13, will be offered during the afternoons from June 11-22. It offers hands-on opportunities in exciting subjects not offered during the regular school year. Classes provide activities that stimulate creativity and imagination while building academic and personal skills.

Students may take from one to four of the one-hour classes, and each class is $25.

Classes are designed to meet the abilities of four age groups: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13.

Some of the classes listed below are offered for more than one age group.

BEGINNING SONG WRITING for ages 10-13 includes lyrics, melody, music theory, recording and editing. Each student will write, record and edit an own original song. Instructor John Liestner is a member of the Nashville Songwriter's Association and a Computer Technician at Verity Middle School.

BITS AND BYTES, a beginning video game programming class for ages 10-13, includes an introduction to video game design, tools, art and sound. Students will design their own 2D games using art, sound and a little programming. Instructor Travis Womack is an IBM Staff Software Engineer.

BRAIN BUZZERS for ages 8 to 13 is an academic team style class on current events, pop culture, social studies and history. Instructor Erica Krebs is a Wurtland Elementary School teacher.

BROADWAY JUNIOR for ages 6 to 11 features activities to develop basic acting and singing skills. Students will take practice character roles and perform for their peers and parents. Instructor Pennie Gavin is a Morehead State University education major.

CHARMED YARN: KNIT/CROCHET FOR BEGINNERS is for ages 8 to 11. The class will include a Harry Potter-themed project and a review of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.” Instructor Pam Klinepeter is an ACTC Librarian.

COLLEGE CAMP OLYMPICS for all age groups includes a variety of individual and team Olympic-themed games. Students will learn about the history of the Olympics while participating in games that give them opportunities to earn medals and be part of an awards ceremony. Instructor Jay Krebs is a social studies and physical education instructor for Greenup County Schools.

FANTASY FANTASTIC for ages 10 to 13 is a history of fantasy from ancient myths to modern tales with wizards and dragons, magical field guides and enchanted wardrobes. Instructor Nicole Pramik is a part-time ACTC English Instructor.

GROSSOLOGY for all ages looks at all kinds of “gross” things going on in your body, including snot, blood, bugs and what is growing under your fingernails. Instructor Grace Gooding has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in zoology.

HAMMING IT UP for ages 10 to 13 is an amateur ham radio operator class that includes learning how amateur radio works, building basic circuits and soldering circuit boards. Instructor Mark Riggs is an ACTC math instructor.

HOLLYHOCKS AND HONEYBEES for ages 6 to 9 includes plants and creepy crawly things and how they work in the environment. Instructor Mary Lou Forman is an ACTC assistant professor and program coordinator of interdisciplinary early childhood education.

INTO THE JUNGLE for ages 6 to 11 explores the diversity of animal and plant life in the jungle including life in the canopy and on the jungle floor, endangered species and extreme jungle facts. Instructor Kristina Smith is a Morehead State University education major.

IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN for ages 6 to 9 looks at environmental dangers facing our planet and the different things people can do that will make a difference. Instructor Tiffany Wilburn is a Morehead State University elementary education graduate.

LET’S WRITE A MOVIE for ages 10 to 13 covers the movie-making process from script to screen, including writing a mini-screen play and designing promotional posters. Nicole Pramik is an ACTC part-time English instructor.

LIVING WITH THE MASTERS for ages 6 to 11 looks at how artists from Van Gogh to Picasso used paint splatters, dots, stripes and cubes to create art works. Instructor Jennifer Cremeans is a local artist with a studio in the Pendleton Art Center.

ME AND MY IMAGINATION for ages 6 to 9 will include creation of 2-D and 3-D artworks using nontraditional materials. Students will learn about insects, snakes, fish, masks and more as they experiment with different art processes and materials. Instructor Rubyanne Potter is an area artist and instructor.

MULTICULTURAL ART for all ages explores art from different countries and cultures with projects ranging from clay pots to paper basket weaving. Instructor Nikki Bryant is ACTC assistant professor of pharmacy technology.

POLICE ACADEMY 102 gives students ages 6 to 9 the chance to earn their Junior Trooper certificate and badge. Personal safety topics will include bicycle safety, water safety and skateboard safety. Instructor Gary Kistner is a retired Kentucky State Police officer.

PRESIDENTS AND PATRIOTISM for all ages is a timely topic for a presidential election year. Student activities will include facts about U.S. presidents and the rules and processes for president elections. Instructor Sonya O'Brien is a Hatcher Elementary School instructional assistant.

SEA EXPLORERS for ages 6 to 9 explores the world under the sea from coral and fish to endangered species. Instructor Elizabeth Diamond is a Morehead State University education major.

TALKING WITH MY HANDS for all ages is based on American Sign Language for Kids, with finger spelling and basic word signs including signs for family members and popular foods. Instructor Paula Beasley is a sign language specialist.

THE ART OF STORYTELLING for ages 10 to 13 introduces fiction writing (short stories, poems) from first draft to publishing your work. Instructor Laura Womack is a Paul G. Blazer High School English teacher.

WELCOME TO RUSSIA for all ages includes basic Russian words and phrases, songs, games and a look at famous Russian cities, traditions and holidays. Instructor Oksana Kinner is a teacher from Russia.

WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE for all ages looks at current events, sports, science and all kinds of facts you can find in the newspaper. Instructor Ed Radjunas is an Arch Coal Company retiree and substitute teacher at area schools.

Registration for College Camp will continue until classes begin June 16, but class enrollments are limited on a first-come basis, so early registration is recommended.
