HURRICANE, W.Va. — Putnam County Parks and Recreation is inviting residents to a Kids’ Fun Day and Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 24, with registration beginning at 9 a.m.
This is the second year for this free event for children ages 14 and under. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. until noon at the Valley Park off of Route 34. There will be free refreshments.
Trophies will be given to winners in their age category for biggest fish, smallest fish and most fish. Door prizes will include fishing rods and tackle boxes. All children will receive a prize bag that might include something a little “fishy.”
Catfish will be released into the pond the day of the event to add to the excitement. For those catching any of the three tagged catfish, they will receive a rod and reel.
Also, a casting competition will be held for accuracy and distance.
Jim Cumm, activities coordinator, said this is a family event.
“We encourage the entire family to get involved,” he said. “The only rule, kids have to catch the fish.”
There are no limits on what can be used for bait.
The Valley Park property contains two ponds, one taking up approximately a half an acre, and the other roughly one acre, Cumm said. He added that he’s looking forward to seeing the community turn out to the event.
“I just think Putnam County needs things to offer children,” he said.
And that’s exactly what he said he’s trying to do with this event.
Cumm added that he appreciates the support of the local business community with AEP John Amos sponsoring trophies and Diamond Electric helping with the cost of door prizes. Also, local Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops as well as Americorps volunteers will be working to keep the day running smoothly.
“I have a lot of support from Putnam County,” Cumm said. “I’m expecting big things here. I think we’re going to have a good turnout.”
