DEP blames subsidence for 30-foot-deep hole in Fairmont yard
FAIRMONT — The Department of Environmental Protection says mine subsidence caused a 30-foot-deep sinkhole in a Fairmont family’s backyard.
Ronnie Hampton and his family were attempting to put up a pool in the yard when someone noticed the 15-foot wide hole.
Fairmont officials called in the DEP after determining there were no sewage or drainage pipes in the area.
DEP investigators consulted mining maps and determined that the hole was caused by subsidence.
The agency is expected to seek bids Thursday to fill in the hole.
