Baird Winds to perform at Ohio University Southern

IRONTON -- The Ohio University Southern Evening Concert Series kicks off its 2008-2009 season with a performance by Baird Winds at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the OUS Riffe Center Mains Rotunda.

The Baird Winds are the faculty woodwind quintet from Morehead State University. Members of the ensemble are Dr. John Viton, oboe; Dr. Jacob Roseman, flute; professor Lori Baruth, clarinet; Dr. David Oyen, bassoon; and Dr. L. Curtis Hammond, horn. Pianist Chia-Ling Hsieh also performs with the group. The concert is free and open to the public.

According to a release from Ohio University-Southern, here is the background on the performers:

John Viton is associate professor of oboe. He holds the DMA, MMA, and MM from Yale University, and the BM from Bowling Green State University. Viton teaches applied oboe, music theory and music reading, and is music theory coordinator. He is an active clinician and soloist, and has performed with numerous chamber music ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States. Each summer, Viton is an artist/teacher at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.

Jacob Roseman is assistant professor of flute. He holds the DM from The Florida State University, the MM from the Eastman School of Music, and the BM from the Philadelphia College of the Arts. He also holds a certificate from the Mozarteum International Summer Academy (Salzburg, Austria). He has performed throughout the United States and Europe, as well as Japan, as a solo recitalist, as a chamber musician, and as an orchestral musician. Roseman has also received full fellowships to several music festivals in the United States and abroad.

Lori Baruth is assistant professor of clarinet. She is currently completing her DMA degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She received her MM and BME degrees from The Ohio State University. Baruth is active as a chamber musician and recitalist with several performances throughout the United States to her credit. She has performed with several symphony orchestras including the Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca Orchestra in Lucca, Italy. She served on the faculty of the Lutheran Summer Music Festival and Academy in St. Peter, Minnesota.

David Oyen is associate professor of bassoon and music theory. He holds the DMA and MM degrees in Bassoon Performance from The Ohio State University, and the BM from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also holds an orchestral music diploma from the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik, Karlsruhe, Germany. Prior to joining the MSU faculty, he performed with orchestras in Ohio and Virginia, serving as principal bassoonist of the Springfield (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra. Oyen also performed in Keith Brion's New Sousa Band and OBOHIO. Other performances include the International Double Reed Society Conference in 1997, 2001, 2003, and 2005. He also served on the faculty of the Lutheran Summer Music Camp and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

L. Curtis Hammond, associate professor of horn, received his DM degree from The Florida State University, the MM with the artist diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the BM from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In addition to teaching horn and conducting the horn ensemble, Hammond also teaches graduate courses and courses in music theory, music sight singing, music listening, and brasswinds class. Hammond has performed with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the United States. He has had also performed with several world-class artists including Isaac Stern, Yo Yo Ma, Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, Sheena Easton, Roberta Flack, and LeAnn Rimes.

Pianist Chia-Ling Hsieh serves as instructor of music and faculty accompanist. She is active as a soloist, collaborative pianist and piano teacher. She is currently a doctoral candidate in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she also earned her master's degree. She earned her bachelor's degree from the National Institute of the Arts (now National Tapei University of the Arts), Tapei, Taiwan. Hsieh is a winner in the First Youth Piano Competition in Taiwan in 1997. Since then she has performed as a soloist in Taiwan, Austria, and the United States. As a collaborative pianist, Hsieh worked with conductors Xian Zhang (the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra associate conductor) and Michael Rosewell, opera director of the Royal College of Music.
