Herd soccer team ties Radford
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall and Radford battled to a 2-2 double overtime tie Sunday in the final game of the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational at Sam Hood Field. Marshall and the Highlanders are now 2-0-2.
"Radford played us directly which we haven't seen much yet this season," interim Herd coach Kevin Long said. "But we will see it more throughout the season so we need to work on finishing."
Missy Gordon scored for the Herd in the 23rd minute. It was her second of the season. Erika Duncan had the Herd's other goal for a 2-0 lead.
McKenzie Vergara got Radford's first goal in the 48th minute. The Highlanders tied it at 87:57 when Ashley Johnson netted an open goal off a feed from Melony Davis.
Herd goalkeeper Liz Orton stopped three shots while Lisa Lubke had 12 saves for the Highlanders.
Marshall extended its unbeaten streak to four matches, which hasn't been done since 2004. The 2004 team went 2-0-2 in its opening four matches before falling to Wright State and finished with three ties.
"We played better than we did Friday, but I am disappointed we didn't convert these dominating performances into wins," said Long. The Herd and The Citadel played to a 2-2 double overtime draw Friday night.
Marshall opens an eight-match road trip Friday against Toledo, which has won two straight Mid-American Conference crowns. Game time is 5 p.m. at Scott Park. The Herd's next home match will be Oct. 10 against SMU.
