Ranked teams VCU, Herd meet in tennis
HUNTINGTON -- A pair of nationally-ranked women's tennis teams are meeting Saturday in the Huntington Tennis Club.
No. 25 Virginia Commonwealth visits No. 55 Marshall for an 11 a.m. match at the indoor facility adjacent to the Huntington Mall. VCU is 11-0 with a Thursday match coming up against Miami (Ohio). Marshall is 9-2 after defeating the Miami RedHawks last weekend, 6-1.
VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova is ranked No. 33 in singles. Marshall's Kellie Schmitt is ranked No. 39.
Marshall doubles partners Schmitt and Karolina Soor are ranked No. 9 nationally and No. 1 in the East Region.
Men's golf
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Marshall had a 12th-place finish in a lineup of 15 teams in the Wexford Intercollegiate.
The 54-hole tournament was played at the par-72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation Course.
Elon led the field at 890 followed by Furman (891) and Kennesaw State (898). Marshall's score was 927.
Jimmy Lytle from Elon was the individual winner with a 210 total.
Marshall players Christian Brand (74-79-77 -- 230) and Trent Schambach (76-76-78 -- 230) were tied for 35th place.
Other Marshall players were Josh Boswell (77-76-82 -- 235), Jonathan Pepe (79-76-83 -- 238) and Nathan Kinker (86-76-80 -- 242).
