Morgantown leads W.Va. city growth

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The latest U.S. Census population estimates show that Morgantown is now West Virginia’s fourth largest city.

Estimates released Wednesday show Morgantown’s population grew by more than 2,900 residents to 29,642 between July 1, 2000, and July 1, 2008.

Population estimates recorded in 2000 placed Morgantown as the state’s fifth largest city, behind Wheeling. Now Wheeling is ranked fifth.

Charleston remains the state’s largest city with more than 50,000 residents. But the Census Bureau estimates the capital city has lost more than 3,000 residents since July 1, 2000.

Huntington is the state's second-largest city with 49,185 residents. It has lost approximately 2,605 residents since July 1, 2000
