5 charged in ginseng bust
CHARLESTON — State conservation officers have arrested five Wyoming and Summers county residents on charges of illegally harvesting or selling ginseng.
The Division of Natural Resources says the names of those arrested are being withheld as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officers were tipped that ginseng was being sold on the Internet and an investigation led to the arrest of a dealer and two others in Wyoming County and the confiscation of more than 50 pounds of ginseng on August 29. Eight pounds of ginseng were found at another home.
In another case, officers arrested two Summers County residents August 30 and seized 126 roots valued at more than $500.
Ginseng possession in West Virginia is allowed only from September through November, so the medicinal plants can reproduce and produce a new crop.
