Lack of A/C a concern for year-round schooling
WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) — Year-round schooling may be a hard sell with some legislators.
Delegate Tim Ennis, a Democrat from Brooke County, is a school bus driver who says buses are not air-conditioned. That means on 90-degree days, kids could be forced to sit in 100-degree heat.
Delegate Tal Hutchins, a Democrat from Ohio County, says not all schools are air-conditioned, either. Still, Hutchins says the idea is worth considering. He just wants evidence it results in a better education.
Gov. Joe Manchin suggested the notion earlier this week.
Year-round schools typically give students four three-week breaks. Advocates say that helps keep children interested and improves behavior.
But summers are family time for many, and teachers often use that time to seek advanced degrees.
