Service for disabled children, families opens

February 07, 2008 @ 11:38 PM

HUNTINGTON -- A quality of life service for disabled children and family members opened the doors to their new location Thursday evening.

Located at 2702 First Ave., Tangible Alternatives is a new group seeking non-profit status that specializes in massage, music, art, and movement based activities. The group of volunteers had been operating for two years as a travel-based program. Their new location not only provides a space to work, but also establishes a headquarters to those who need assistance.

"We just want to be available to parents and people who work with kids and to be a resource," said Susan McKinley, director of Tangible Alternatives. "It's nice to have a home."

The grand opening was from 5 to 7 p.m. and featured live music and refreshments as well as a tour of the newly renovated building.

According to McKinley, walls were built inside, painted and made child safe. Along with these improvements, the building is home to a snoezelen, or a multi-sensory room that provides a therapeutic, soothing effect for children with disabilities.

Although many of the activities such as the music, art and the snoezelen are directed at children, parents and family members are also a focus, with workshops and training classes available for parents. The group also just aims to take the pressure off parents to give them a chance to relax.

"My son goes to speech therapy and occupational therapy, but there isn't really a place that deals with his sensory issues like their sensory room," said Ellen Billis. "Everything from the massage therapy to the music to the art, this place is going to be phenomenal. I'm just so excited."
