RALEIGH, N.C. -- Marshall had six pitchers combine to throw a one-hit baseball shutout Wednesday against N.C. State.
Marshall (9-12) ended a six-game skid with a 3-0 win at Doak Field.
Reliever Ryan Kiel, the second Marshall pitcher on the mound, worked 3.2 innings and got the win. Arik Sikula retired the side in the eighth and ninth innings to record his third save.
The Thundering Herd made the most of its five hits.
Adam Yeager opened the game by drawing a walk, stealing second and going to third on a groundout. Josh Valle singled in the run.
Jeff Rowley drew a walk in the seventh inning and scored on Kurt Lipton's double to right field. Lipton scored the third run when Kevin Shackelford reached base on a throwing error.
Valle's hitting streak reached 13 games.
Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Stacie Chambers hit a grand slam home run Wednesday for Arizona in a 9-1 softball victory over Marshall.
It was the first game of a doubleheader.
Taryne Mowatt pitched a five-inning, one-hitter for the Wildcats (22-8). Marshall's only hit was a Kelly Nielson solo homer in the second inning.
No. 1 Arizona State completed a doubleheader sweep of Marshall late Tuesday night with a 13-1 victory in Tempe, Ariz. Amanda Nesbitt pitched a five-inning, two-hitter for the Sun Devils (36-2).
Marshall (12-19) is at home Saturday to begin a three-game series with UCF.
Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn, ranked No. 33 in the nation, downed No. 73 Marshall, 6-1, in a women's tennis match Wednesday.
Jessica Keener from Marshall beat Gaby Beelen, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 singles position.
