Big loads to pass unimpeded through Va. tunnels
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Wide loads heading toward West Virginia won’t have to detour around two tunnels in Virginia much longer.
Traffic through the Interstate 77 tunnels has been restricted for the past 2 1/2 years as Virginia officials worked to renovate them.
Fourteen- and 16-foot-wide loads were not permitted through the Big Walker and East River Mountain tunnels on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The project caused West Virginia’s manufactured housing industry grief as the mobile trailers are too wide to go through the work areas. Rigs were forced to take detours, adding to shipping costs.
Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Michelle Earl says lanes should be open by the middle of the month and the projects should be finished by mid-December.
