Lawrence County to celebrate courthouse centennial
IRONTON — While not a lot of things are worth a wooden nickel, there is one. It’s a wooden nickel, and it will be among the things given away free Saturday during the Lawrence County Courthouse centennial in downtown Ironton.
The courthouse is 100 years old this year, and a celebration is scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, said Tami Meade, a member of the centennial commission.
“We’ll have free hot dogs. We’ll be giving away wooden nickels, and we have 10,000 postcards we’ll be giving away,” Meade said Friday. Someone from the Ironton Post office will be there to cancel the postcards with Saturday’s date. The wooden nickel will have a picture of the courthouse on one side and a portrait of Ironton founder John Campbell on the other.
The county used $130,000 in bonds a century ago to build the three-story courthouse that sits between South 4th and 5th streets and Park Avenue and Center Street, Meade said.
“We’re trying to let citizens see what goes on day-to-day in the courthouse,” said Lou Pyles, another member of the centennial commission. “We’ll have old photos and books on display. There’s been a number of changes over the years. We hope to have a nice turnout. There will be music and refreshments.”
There will be free carriage rides from the courthouse several blocks away to the John Campbell House, the headquarters of the Ironton-Lawrence County Area Community Action Organization at 305 N. 5th St., said Joan Terry, an executive secretary at the community action organization.
“We’ll have tours of the first floor of the John Campbell House,” Terry said. “We hope to have a re-enactor and old photos on display.”
Other activities planned for Saturday include the Nannie Kelly Wright divorce trial re-enactment at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. in the third floor of the courthouse annex. Wright is a former female ironmaster.
Kay Rader, an Ironton resident, will tell the life story of Wright at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
