Softball team drops pair; shot putter sets new record

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia scored twice in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat Marshall, 4-2, in the finale in the Red/Black Showcase on Sunday at the UGA Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs (5-1) tied the game in the third when Tara Schlopy scored on a single by Melissa Wood, who drove in two for the game. In the fourth, Georgia loaded the bases and got two runs home on a walk and hit-by-pitch.

All-American Rachel Folden led Marshall (3-3) with three hits. She had two doubles and leads the team with a .565 batting average.

In the first game Sunday, No. 10 DePaul rallied from a 5-1 deficit to edge the Herd, 6-5. The Blue Demons struck for four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. Jackie Tarulli-Fisher culminated the rally with a three-run home run. This made up for Friday's 4-3 loss to the Herd.

The Herd is back in action this weekend in the Tiger Invitational at Auburn. Marshall meets Gardner-Webb on Friday at 4 p.m. McNeese State, Furman, Evansville and host Tigers round out the field.

Women's track

NEW YORK -- Rachel Blankenship broke the indoor record for the shot put again with a toss of 46 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the New Balance Invitational on Saturday.

Andrea Jackson set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 39-111/2 and place second. Teniqua Sutton, who set the record in 2005, placed fourth (39-10 1/2).

The Thundering Herd's next meet is the Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Clemson, S.C. Clemson is the host.

Tennis

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Marshall, ranked No. 53 nationally, beat No. 73 Yale University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Sami Tennis Center in University Park, Pa. The Thundering Herd (6-2) is now 2-0 all time against the Bulldogs.

Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor, ranked No. 15, continued their perfect season at No. 1 doubles with a 9-8 decision against the No. 50 pair of Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz. Schmitt stayed perfect at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Janet Kim.

Marshall returns to action this Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Herd will meet Pittsburgh at noon and Cincinnati at 5 p.m.
