Child porn conviction nets man home confinement
HUNTINGTON — A man who served as a Milton police officer in the 1970s will now spend two years on home confinement.
The punishment stems from a September 2006 arrest on charges of possessing child pornography.
Harold Dewane Wooten, 58, of Culloden pleaded guilty in November to two counts of possessing material that depicted minors engaged in sexual conduct.
Circuit Judge Alfred Ferguson ordered the two-year home confinement sentence Monday morning.
Those charges were part of a five-count indictment that accused Wooten of child pornography incidents dating back to July 2006. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss three of the counts in return for Wooten’s guilty plea.
West Virginia State Police said Wooten photographed himself with a 14-year-old girl at his residence, which was located at White's Trailer Park in Culloden. Investigators said he distributed the explicit image over the Internet via a Webcam.
Wooten had no comment after court Monday.
Assistant prosecutor Jara Howard said the plea deal was a fair agreement. Her side did not contest the home confinement sentence.
Wooten’s attorney, Virginia Weed, said her client is not the typical criminal. She said he had no criminal record prior to the child pornography allegations.
