Marshall gets $3 million in funding

May 19, 2009 @ 04:59 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marshall University will receive $3.64 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Center for Research Resources.

“Marshall University is a premier institute for education and innovation in southern West Virginia,” said U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall, adding that the funding is for the West Virginia IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence which will allow for better communication among educators in the field of biomedicine in our state.

Marshall President Stephen Kopp said the funds will help build biomedical research infrastructure across West Virginia and help attract more students to biomedical research career opportunities.

Marshall, in partnership with West Virginia University, was awarded a Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network award in 2001 by the National Institute of Health to begin to build a collaborative effort to sponsor research at West Virginia undergraduate institutions. These additional funds will build on the success of the original program and will allow West Virginia’s institutes of higher education to continue working together to provide the best learning opportunities possible for students in the field of biomedical research.

The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) is a part of the National Institutes of Health that provides laboratory scientists and clinical researchers with the tools and training they need to understand, detect, treat, and prevent a wide range of diseases. NCRR supports all aspects of clinical and translational research, connecting researchers, patients and communities across the nation.
