Kanawha County officials try to determine source of chemical haze
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Emergency officials are trying to determine the source of a bluish haze covering much of Kanawha County.
Emergency dispatchers have contacted every area chemical plant and say no leaks have been reported. Most 911 callers are complaining of a bleach-like smell in the air.
Kanawha County Commission President Carper says it’s troubling that no one is taking responsibility.
Carper says residents are being told to contact the authorities immediately if they feel any ill effects. He also advises anyone who is worried about the haze to stay inside.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Dave Marsalek says the chemical is being kept close to the ground by a layer of warm air.
