Community mourns woman's death with candlelight vigil

HUNTINGTON -- Family, friends and neighbors held a solemn vigil in Wednesday night's drizzle for the loss of a loved one who was killed in a shooting Monday.
Kathryn Gale Smith, 58, was killed by a single shotgun shot to the head following a domestic incident at her home in Guyandotte, according to the Huntington Police Department. Police arrested 41-year-old Robert Scott Frazier on Tuesday in connection with the shooting.
About 30 people gathered at Kathryn Smith's residence at 530 Richmond St. to comfort one another, while still in shock of what took place in the small neighborhood. Kathryn Smith's uncle Henry Smith represented the family at the vigil and gave a few words.
"Sometimes words can't describe what you feel," said an emotional Henry Smith. "All I can say is that she will be greatly missed."
Neighbors Tim and Pat Morgan said they've known Kathryn Smith for more than 15 years and couldn't believe someone would hurt her. The Morgans described her as a woman willing to help anyone in need, in any way she could.
"She didn't have to know you to help you out," Tim Morgan said.
"She was such a sweet woman," Pat Morgan said. "She was the sort of person who would do anything she could to help you out no matter what."
The Morgans said Kathryn Smith was loved by everyone in the community and often let the neighborhood children play with her dogs and puppies. Since her death, Tim Morgan said neighbors have pitched in and adopted her dogs.
Henry Smith said the funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville. The service will be held at the first mausoleum on the left when entering the facility located at 1000 Peyton Street.
