ORGAN CAVE, W.Va. (AP) — A large number of turkeys and eggs were destroyed in a fire at one of the world’s largest poultry breeding farms.
Ronceverte Fire Chief Jody Campbell says the building owned by Aviagen (AY’-vuh-jen) Turkeys was a total loss.
Firefighters were able to keep Wednesday’s early morning blaze from spreading to the other three buildings on the Organ Cave property.
No word yet on the cause of the fire.
Aviagen officials don’t yet have an estimate on the number of turkeys and eggs that were in the 10,000-square-foot building.
Spokeswoman Sandi Hofmann calls it a big loss but says company officials are relieved no employees were hurt.
According to its Web site, Aviagen is the world leader in poultry breeding.
