HUNTINGTON -- The 11th annual Ice Bowl broke records on Saturday with the largest turnout ever, raising an estimated $8,500 for the Huntington Area Food Bank.

About 60 people participated in the Ice Bowl, organized by Don Kleppe and the Huntington Disc Golf Club at Rotary Park.

The charity disc golf event at the 18-hole disc golf course also took in an estimated 100 pounds of donated food items, Kleppe said.

People from all over the region attended the event, including 18-year-old Ryan Shirley of Caledonia, Ohio.

Shirley started playing disc golf about two years ago and has played more than 30 courses, including one in Florida.

"I've traveled all over," he said.

Kleppe said people of all ages enjoy the sport that involves throwing a throwing disk into a metal basket. It's something students, doctors, lawyers and blue collar workers can all play, he said.

"It's a great mixer of all kinds of people of all walks of life," he said.

Scott Ringham, director of the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Kentucky, was also out playing on Saturday. Ringham had never heard of disc golf until about two years ago, when the park he directs turned its golf course into a disc golf course.

"Disc golf doesn't lose money," he said.

Ringham said disc golf is an inexpensive sport that anyone can play.

"My wife and I play. My kids play. We all do it together," he said.

Kleppe said the participants were all having fun for a good cause on Saturday.

"We're just out in the middle of winter, having a good time playing disc golf," he said.
