HUNTINGTON -- More than one mother had tears in her eyes before the Mother's Day fashion show at Huntington Mall on Saturday afternoon.
Many families said the event made Mother's Day weekend even more memorable.
Mothers and daughters took the stage outside Macy's around 1 p.m. to show off the latest fashion trends. The 5th annual Mother/Daughter Look-A-Like contest followed.
Connie Eves of Milton stood with daughters Courtney, 17, and Jessica, 14, in navy blues and pinks before their walk. She said her girls had been modeling at the mall since they could walk.
"It's kind of like a tradition for us," she said. "It's something special."
Jessica Eves said she was happy to be part of the event that threw some spotlight on her mother. Her sister agreed.
"We're going to show Mom off," Courtney Eves said.
Sherii Carpenter of Ona took the runway with her five daughters, first modeling outfits from Elder-Beerman. She walked with 18-year-old Kaybreh, 16-year-old Joanne, 15-year-old Kathleen, 12-year-old Jodi, and 10-year-old Cherish.
"I just want to be able to do something fun with my kids," she said.
While two of her girls normally model as part of the mall's fashion advisory board, this was a chance for all of the Carpenter women to participate, she said.
"Getting Mom into it is fun," Kaybreh Carpenter said.
Nearly 50 models, ages four months old and up, participated in the event.
The show featured guest models as well as fashion advisory board models and their mothers, according to Margi MacDuff, marketing director for the Huntington Mall.
The look-alike contest also raises money for the March of Dimes each year, MacDuff said.
"It's a great event. The moms and daughters enjoy it, and it's for a great cause," she said.
Lois Bickerton and daughter Lauren, 17, of Huntington also walked on Saturday. Lauren Bickerton regularly models for the mall, and said her mother modeled years ago, too.
"I encouraged her to get into this so I wanted to do it with her this weekend and support her," Lois Bickerton said.
The pair dressed first in coordinating browns.
"It's sweet," Lauren Bickerton said.
