CHARLESTON — A concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day will be aired on several television stations throughout West Virginia during the Mother’s Day weekend. Stations in Beckley, Charleston, Clarksburg and Wheeling will broadcast the concert that was taped last month in the capital city. The concert, one of three held to celebrate the centennial of Mother’s Day, included an appearance from First Lady Gayle C. Manchin as an honorary spokesperson, portrayal of the holiday’s founder Anna Jarvis by Cathy Pleska of Scott Depot and music by the Appalachian Children’s Choir directed by Selina Midkiff, and music by operatic tenor Randall Reid-Smith.
“I’m very happy that viewers across the state will be able to enjoy this concert,” the first lady said. “Mother’s Day is very special to the state of West Virginia, especially this year which is the 100th anniversary of the holiday.”
Anna Jarvis, a native of West Virginia, initiated the celebration honoring moms in 1908. The concert is one of many events held in 2008 to celebrate the holiday’s 100th anniversary.
